BACKGROUND

This partnership of the Battle Lake Lions Club, District 5M-9; Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF); and the Fergus Falls Area Habitat for Humanity to cooperatively build a house for a needy disabled person in the community began in November of 2002. The Battle Lake Club was contacted by Fergus Falls Habitat about the new Core 4 Partnership Program sponsored by LCIF.

The new Core 4 Partnership Program calls for such a project to be divided as follows: 25% funds from LCIF, 25% funds and in kind donations from the participating club/s, and 50% of funds and in kind donations from the area Habitat agency. This was a much more doable project for a small club in a small town. So when Fergus Falls Area Habitat approached the Battle Lake Lions Club and the board of directors was given a presentation about its possible commitment, the board voted to support a request for a LCIF Core 4 grant. On January 9, 2003 the request of the Battle Lake Club was made to the Mid-Winter Convention, District 5M-9 cabinet meeting. The cabinet approved the resolution to support the Club's request for the LCIF Core 4 grant.

The first major obstacle was selection of a qualified disabled person/family for a house. Fergus Falls Area Habitat was solely in charge of the selection process through its family selection committee based on Habitat criteria. A family was approved that qualified with a disabled person. The selection was completed in time for the April LCIF meeting which approved a Core 4 grant of $14,676 to be matched by the Battle Lake Lions Club and a 200% match by the Fergus Falls Area Habitat for Humanity based on a total of allowed project construction expenses of $58,704.

Construction of the house began in late May with planning meetings of the Battle Lake Affiliate leading to beginning actual construction. The planned house needed to meet Habitat for Humanity requirements for the disabled. The planning and oversight committee for this project is made up of the regular members of the Battle Lake Affiliate and four representatives from the Battle Lake Lions Club.
